Wexford defeat Kilkenny in hurling’s first ever free-taking shootout

Wexford have once again defeated Kilkenny but this time they made a bit of history in doing so. With the Walsh Cup final ending level, at 1-21 to 1-21, in regulation, we were off to extra time. The sides could still not be separated and, with the match ending 1-24 apiece, it was off to a free-taking shootout. This was the first time in the GAA's history that the Walsh Cup would be decided by such a shoot-out and followed on from a similar tie-breaker in the Meath and Longford football game last weekend. Kilkenny raced into a 2-0 lead during the shootout, with efforts being pinged from 65 metres out, but Conor MacDonald made a good connection to keep Wexford in the hunt.
