Prized DJ Carey possession sold to help victims in ‘dire circumstances’

The disgraced hurling icon lifted the Liam MacCarthy five times during a glittering career, with the first coming in 1992, when Kilkenny defeated Cork in the final.

Carey is currently serving a five-and-a-half year prison sentence for defrauding 22 people out of over €400,000 with a fake cancer scheme.

While the fee for the sale is undisclosed, its asking price was €10,000 from Whyte’s Auctioneers.

On the sale, Ian Whyte said: “The medal was sold privately for an undisclosed sum."

The medal was sold on behalf of two persons who had been defrauded by Carey.

They released a statement explaining that the medal had been gifted to them by Carey after they had offered him financial assistance for treatment for his fake cancer diagnosis, and that they wish to use the proceeds from the sale to help others who have been affected by Carey's deception.

The statement reads: “DJ Carey gifted his first All-Ireland senior hurling medal as a thank you to my family for assistance in helping him financially to access treatment.

“Not being GAA followers, we did not want to accept, but he was adamant that our help had meant that he would now go on to live a full life and see his sons mature and marry, etc.”

It also said: “there are two individuals (unknown to each other) who like so many were far too frightened to give official statements against Carey.

“They are living in dire circumstances as a direct result of their dealings with him. It is my hope that the sale of this medal will benefit them.”
