WATCH: Michael Conlan’s immediate reaction to Rio robbery captured the mood of an entire nation

Where were you when Michael Conlan had four years’ hard graft flushed down the toilet by three judges in Rio?

If you are anything like us, you took time away from whatever you were doing to watch the Belfast boxer as he looked for the win that would secure a bronze on the [hopeful] was to gold.

Around 13 minutes after the starting bell, we knew. Comlan would return to Ireland empty-handed.

The world champion can hold his head high – he boxed a fine fight – but that will mean little to him. Now or for the coming weeks, months and years.

Conlan and his corner were aware that he had somehow lost the first round, across the board, only to level matters in the next. Going into the final round, he went back to the trusty right hand that had picked Vladimir Nikitin off in round two.

He felt sure that he did enough but the three judges felt otherwise.

You can see from the video below that Conlan was expecting to have his armed raised. Nikitin did not but was delighted when the call came… Unanimous.

Conlan summed up his immediate emotions with a simple, double-barrel expletive and repeated it for effect.

Heart-wrenching for the Irish boxer.

No boxing medals from Rio but too much controversy to take.
