Conflicting reports on favourite in two-horse race for Mayo manager role

The battle is heating up!

According to Mayo GAA, there are four applicants, but reports have said that it is two men who are the hot favourites, Tony McEntee and Andy Moran, following Kevin McStay's controversial departure earlier this summer.

McEntee, who won the 2002 All-Ireland with Armagh as a player, has recently stepped down after a successful five years managing Sligo, while he also led Crossmaglen to All-Ireland titles in 2011 and 2012.

He was also part of Stephen Rochford's Mayo backroom team from 2016 to 2018.

Moran, a former Footballer of the Year, has spent the last year as a coach with Monaghan and has previously managed the Mayo U20s and Leitrim.

This morning, the Irish Independent have reported that it is the latter who is hot favourite to take over, with a prospective backroom team including his former Mayo teammate Colm Boyle.

However, The Connaught Telegraph have said that McEntee remains the favourite, and that WhatsApp messages shared in recent days claiming that he had been unsuccessful "at the interview stage" are false.
