Mayo boss reveals crucial actions from assistant led to All-Ireland winning white top

Their last two All-Ireland SFC title wins have come in white, and for the latter, the colour certainly played a crucial role in a game with such fine margins.

Kerry won the 2025 Sam Maguire wearing their alternative blue strip, but it was Mayo's turn last month to tog out in a less-familiar shade.

Earlier in the season Mayo wore their black alternative top, which also has red and light green stripes, and their second-choice kit from the season before was not too dissimilar.

And it was during the 2025 season that they faced Kerry in the league final, where, as Moran explained, it was a struggle to make out the difference between the two sides.

Thankfully, Mayo selector Colm Boyle had been on the ball early in 2026, and had flagged this as a potential issue.

Moran revealed that it was largely thanks to him that the county wore white in the All-Ireland final.

Speaking with the Irish Examiner, he said: "It’s funny how things work out. Boyler since the start of the year has been obsessed with our first-choice away jersey – let’s just say he’s not a fan!

"And we actually did a piece up for the county board a few months ago with screenshots from last year’s league final when you can barely make out the difference between the Kerry jersey and our alternative jersey.

"So when we lost the toss, Boyler went on his little rant again, suggested we go for the white jersey and the county board agreed."
