Brian O’Driscoll has very different take on Ireland’s World Cup group to the rest of us

Tony Cuddihy

As a means of warning Irish fans not to be complacent, this hits the spot.

Brian O’Driscoll was not falling into the same trap as his former Ireland teammate Jamie Heaslip on Wednesday morning.

Joe Schmidt will be hoping that Heaslip’s reportedly elated reaction to Ireland’s World Cup pool will not make Ireland hostages to fortune as they prepare to face host Japan and Scotland in 2019, and former Ireland captain Brian O’Driscoll was not making the same mistake.

While the meaning behind O’Driscoll’s tweet is deliberately vague, you can be sure he’s not taking Scotland – who beat Ireland in this year’s Six Nations and have proven victorious in four of the last 10 meetings between the sides – lightly.

As well as Scotland, Japan will be no pushovers for the Irish team – they will have an entire nation behind them as hosts, and their victory over South Africa during the last World Cup in England remains one of the most remarkable giant-killings in the sport’s history.

In other words, maybe we should calm down a bit.
