The main takeaway from the Irish media - other than some questionable refereeing decisions - was that there is now a clear gap between South Africa/New Zealand/France and Ireland.
The All Blacks were lethal at times today, working their way up the pitch in minimal phases with their pace and power, combined with their famous accuracy of pass and ability to exploit space.
And their often critical media reflected this in their analysis, with big praise for the team.
But what did they think of Ireland?
While there were compliments and an acknowledgement that Ireland shot themselves in the foot quite a lot, the overall picture wasn't pretty.
Liam Napier of The New Zealand Herald wrote:
"Ireland were on the ropes, and soon out for the count. By halftime, staring down the barrel of a 28-7 deficit, dreams of a maiden Eden Park victory were dashed.
"Ireland’s skill execution was horrible at times, well below standards, expected at first XV level. Passes hit the deck, went into touch and gifted Will Jordan a try. The All Blacks’ try scoring record holder needs no second invitation, either."
Robert van Royen from Stuff said:
"While this is not the same beast that the Irish team of 2022 was, they’re still a formidable side, albeit one made to look sub par by the All Blacks, and one that constantly shot itself in the foot through sloppiness, including a plethora of loose passes and a lack of discipline."
1news were slightly more complimentary:
"This was a significant result and performance and several levels above their previous wins this month against France and Italy.
"The Irish looked a little tired and out of sorts on attack but when they retained the ball and kept it tight they presented a real and present danger – especially from close range."
The ever-controversial Ben Smith of RugbyPass, was particularly scathing as you can read from his tweets below.
All Blacks take a 40-21 win. Ireland much better in the 2nd half. Dan Sheehan was a moaning grifter tonight. Too much backchat, constantly complaining. Wants a free ride every time. A poor look.

When the All Blacks have the ball it is one way traffic. Green jerseys are getting battered into submission. Ireland trying all sorts of illegal play at the breakdown to slow them down. With the ball it’s been a slew of errors for Ireland. Can’t remember a more error-ridden…

Peter O’Mahony has to check himself after passionate tirade against ref
This was brilliant from POM! Ireland never looked like winning this morning’s Test match against New Zealand at Eden Park, but it could have been a lot closer had calls gone their way. A dangerous clearout from Luke Jacobson on Josh van der Flier was not upgraded to a red card, with the TMO giving […]

Ireland player ratings as New Zealand put a wasteful side to the sword
A lot of positives but more negatives… Ireland showed a lot of good stuff in a 40-21 loss, but were incredibly wasteful throughout against a clinical New Zealand side. Tom O’Toole – 6 Solid scrum, giving Ireland a good platform which they didn’t take advantage of. His best game of the tour so far. Dan […]
