What’s in a name?
Well, in fight circles, everything’s in a name and some nicknames are so perfect that it beggars belief that the fighter was, at one point in his/her life, not known by that sobriquet.
‘Iron’ Mike Tyson, Ray ‘Boom Boom’ Mancini and a whole host of ‘Pitbulls’ prove that nicknames are important in how we come to perceive fighters.
And British heavyweight prospect Anthony Joshua is raging that he didn’t think of Conor McGregor’s nickname before him.
He told IFLTV: “I like Conor McGregor… ‘The Notorious.’ I wish I took that name. I like it.
“I like everything about Conor McGregor. I like what he’s doing for the sport of UFC (MMA), as well.”
‘AJ’ is a huge fan of McGregor and he’s hopeful that he gets past lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos next month, pointing to the fact that haters are just waiting to jump on McGregor’s first UFC loss.
“I hope he doesn’t lose because it’s a fickle world,” Joshua added. “One minute, everyone’s on your back and you’re the flavour of the month. You take a loss, everyone writes you off.
“He’s done a lot for the sport of UFC (MMA) so far and you can’t fault him. You can’t fault a man for losing. It’s how he gets back up.
“I think so far he’s done unbelievably well for the sport of UFC (MMA).
“I hope he continues that so long live Conor McGregor!”
