Ian Machado Garry failed in his attempt to become the first UFC title holder since Conor McGregor, following his unanimous decision loss to Islam Makhachev last night.
The Dubliner battled it out with the Russian for the UFC Welterweight Championship at UFC 330 in Philadelphia, but ultimately his striking style was no match for the wrestler.
It takes Makhachev's record to 29 wins and one loss, and also gave him the record for most UFC wins in a row, with seventeen, breaking Anderson Silva's 13-year record.
For Garry, it takes him to 17 wins and two losses.
However, UFC boss Dana White had little sympathy for the 28-year-old, and criticised his lack of killer instinct.
He said: "It felt like tonight was set up for the upset, with so much on the line. There are weight classes for a reason. Ian is a talented guy. If he had even an ounce of killer instinct... in that fifth round, he had been beating him, Islam's right side and face was beat up.
"You don't come out and hug and shake hands, it drives me f***ing crazy when there is so much at stake. There is so much mental gamesmanship in this game, you come out in that fifth round with a flying knee, something crazy, you try and finish the fight.
"I think this is one of those fights that Ian will go back and watch and be like, 'f***, I wish I could do that over again'. If he came out and tried to destroy and win that last round, I think it's a totally different fight."
