Michael Owen named Liverpool’s first ever international ambassador and the fans, well, y’know

Mikey Stafford

Was everyone else busy?

Let’s think about it.

Robbie Fowler has his property empire to manage. Alan Hansen has golf. Mark Lawrenson talks about football to whoever will listen, forever. Steven Gerrard is slaving away in Robbie Keane’s LA shadow and Kenny Dalglish, well, where is Kenny Dalglish?

Why couldn’t Dalglish or Graeme Souness or Phil Babb or Charlie Adam get the gig as Liverpool’s first international ambassador?

Steve Staunton?!? There’s your man.

Surely anyone would be better than BT Sport’s football explainer 3000, Michael Owen.

Surely when you finish off your career playing for Liverpool’s most hated rivals you lose any claim to these prime, golden handshake roles.

Also, the supporters are not exactly enamoured with the man who used to be the boy who scored 158 goals in 297 appearances for the Reds.

Nope, congratulations to Liverpool’s first-ever international ambassador.

“As a Liverpool fan I am honoured and delighted to have been asked to play this international role for the club,” said the racehorse owner.

“Liverpool FC is the world’s greatest football family and it’s great for me to be able to represent the club in an official capacity once again.”

The reaction was predictable.
