This confirms what we all thought anyway
Liverpool are making a real of habit of being the transfer market’s nearly men. Whether it’s Diego Costa, Henrikh Mkhitaryan or Alexis Sanchez, the Reds are becoming masters at ‘Well, we were in for him’.
The latest member of that illustrious club is Dutch star Memphis Depay, who last week agreed a €30million move from PSV to Manchester United, leaving Liverpool fans to rue yet another ‘near miss’.
Well, not quite. The 21-year-old has spoken about his move to England, and while acknowledging the lure of French giants Paris Saint-Germain, at no point does he even suggest he seriously contemplated heading for Merseyside.
“I was really close to a transfer to Paris Saint-Germain,” Depay said. “But in the last moment, I know Man U was always interested, but not concrete, and in the last moment they called my manager and, of course, I spoke with the trainer Louis van Gaal.
“So yeah, it was a difficult situation, let me say that, but after I spoke with the trainer, Louis van Gaal, I say to myself I want to go to Manchester.”
