The US Open 2025: Day Two Review

Paddy Morgan

Day two of 125th US Open took place on Friday June 13th in Pennsylvania at Oakmont Country Club.

The 7,382 yard par 70 remained extremely challenging on Friday due to five inch deep rough and +4 Rory McIlroy got off to a poor beginning as several unforced errors resulted in an opening double bogey.

Oakmont is hosting it’s 10th US Open and this layout is surrounded by 168 bunkers which includes church pew hazards and this caused a problem for McIlroy on par four third hole as he unfortunately recorded his second double bogey in three holes.

McIlroy achieved legendary status after winning The Masters in April but refused to give up hope as he finished his front nine with an extraordinary birdie at Extremely long 472 yard ninth hole.

USGA don’t like to see top stars of a 156 man field leaving a US Open after two rounds and McIlroy’s weekend quest started to become more difficult due to a bogey on 406 yard 11th hole.

Professional golf is a better place when it includes a halfway cut and McIlroy remarkably achieved a birdie on the 15th hole to return +7.

McIlroy needed a positive 18th hole and a 373 yard drive followed by a great short iron led to a closing birdie.

McIlroy +6 is in a tie for 45 th , a weekend tee time could be a momentum boost as he is capable in putting together two under par performances.

Sam Burns +2 lost out narrowly last weekend in a play-off to Ryan Fox in RBC Canadian Open and is extremely motivated to go one better especially in recording a sensational -4 front nine.

The strength of Burns game is his flatstick as he is ranked first in PGA Tour Putting category and managed a steady finish to post 65 which is his lowest US Open round.

Burns -3 has experience of winning big events as he previously achieved victory at WGC Dell Technologies match play and a great weekend will go a long way towards USA Ryder Cup qualification. -4 day one leader JJ Spaun recovered brillantly to reach -5 after six holes.

Spaun responded immediately to follow dropped shots with an excellent birdie on 11 to return -4 before finishing his round with three bogeys in four holes.

Spaun -2 is in second place and the only other player that is under par is -1 Viktor Hovland due to a spectacular 68.

Level par is next best and the two players on this score have nothing in common as Ben Griffin is remarkably making his US Open debut and mister longevity as this is Adam Scott 96 th consecutive major.

The highest LIV Tour member out of 14 participating beginning day two was -2 Brooks Koepka and a round of 74 included a stunning chip in for birdie on 17.

Scottie Scheffler +3 got off to a perfect beginning due to an opening birdie but only managed to find six fairways which resulted in a +1 front nine.

Scheffler showed why he is world number one as only hitting seven greens in regulation didn’t affect him as he battled to finish +4 and keeps his winning chances alive heading into Saturday.

+7 ended up been the halfway cut and major champions Cameron Smith, Shane Lowry, Wyndham Clark, six-time US Open runner-up Phil Mickelson, 2024 US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau all took an unfortunate early bath.
