Troy Parrott gives most emotional interview in recent memory from an Irish athlete

Seamus Brady

Troy Parrott produced a night that Irish fans will never forget. The striker scored a hat-trick, including a winner in the 90+5 minute, to send Ireland into the World Cup playoff. It was a huge moment for the team and for Parrott himself.

Ireland pushed hard for one final chance as the clock ran down. With five minutes of added time almost gone, Caoimhín Kelleher floated the ball forward. Liam Scales met it with a clever flick. Parrott reacted instantly. He chased the loose ball, got there before the defender and poked it past the goalkeeper. The stadium exploded as the ball rolled into the net. It completed his hat-trick and sealed a famous 3-2 win.

Parrott also made history. He is now the first Irish player ever to score a hat-trick away from home in a competitive international match. The magnitude of the achievement hit him immediately after the final whistle.

Speaking to RTÉ’s Tony O’Donoghue after the game, Parrott struggled to hide his emotions. “I’m so emotional. This is why we love football because things like this can happen,” he said. He explained that moments like this are what every player dreams of. His voice cracked as he spoke about his pride.

He also talked about what it means to represent Ireland. “I love where I’m from,” he said. He pointed to his family in the stands and described how important the night was for them. “My family are here, this means the world to me.”

For Ireland, this victory brings renewed hope and a place in the playoff. For Parrott, it marks the greatest performance of his international career so far. It was a night of grit, belief and history, and Ireland now move forward with real momentum.
