Ireland fans were left confused in the opening minutes after Hungary’s early goal was allowed to stand. Daniel Lukacs headed the ball into the net inside four minutes, and the decision went to VAR for a possible offside. Many Irish supporters were convinced the Hungarian forward had moved too early, and the initial replays offered little clarity.
However, a later angle appeared to show the boot of Josh Cullen playing Lukacs onside. In the wider shot, Cullen’s foot can be seen level with the goalscorer, which may have been the detail the officials used to confirm the goal. Although it frustrated the travelling Irish supporters, the VAR process ultimately backed the on-field decision.
Hungary, though, regained control before the half-time whistle. A powerful strike from Varga restored their lead, and the home crowd lifted again. Ireland struggled to stop the move, and Varga’s finish left the goalkeeper with no chance.

Ireland responded well after the setback. They pushed forward with more intent and were rewarded when Troy Parrott won a penalty. The spot-kick came after Chiedozie Ogbene was fouled inside the area, and VAR again played a role as the referee reviewed the incident on the monitor. Parrott kept his composure and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way. It was his third goal in two games and brought Ireland deservedly level.
Ireland now face a huge challenge in the second half. They must find a way back into the game to keep their hopes of reaching a first World Cup since 2002 alive. With the stakes so high, the next 45 minutes will define their campaign.
