Slaughtneil: The stuff of GAA dreams

Slaughtneil is a community of no more than 300 families.
Yet the standard bearing Derry club field three camogie teams. On Sunday, the first of those aim to become only the second club ever, after Buffers' Alley of Wexford, to win four All-Ireland senior camogie titles in a row. The Slaughtneil story is an amazing story. Situated in Bally-go-backwards style rural Derry, there are hills and mountains all around and as you travel the remote, winding roads between Dungiven and Maghera, the last thing you expect is the monumental GAA facility that awaits. A gigantic pair of clubhouses, a state of the art gym, a ball-wall. There are acres of green grass where the youngsters flock, kicking ball and swinging hurleys. Slaughtneil has no problems with numbers these days. There's the tales of Thomas Cassidy's tireless commitment to his club, Chrissy McKaigue's leadership and of course, the near legendary Slaughtneil teen disco that got it all going.
