As mentioned by the Irish Examiner, a look at 10 senior county finals showed that out of the 20 sides, 13 were either manager or coached by someone from outside the club.
The GAA’s National Games Development Committee are now looking at putting a halt to this trend by imposing measures on teams.
According to the Irish Independent, the Games Development Committee have had discussions with the GAA’s Amateur Status Review Committee, and the ASRC may bring relevant motions to Congress in February.
The chairman of the National Games Development Committee, Micheál Martin, spoke on the issue and explained why it goes against the GAA's 2022-2026 funding model.
He said: “The first principle of the 2022 funding model was to help build self-sufficient clubs. What we are finding is if more clubs need to go outside for a coach or manager, that’s at odds with that first principle of our investment.
“Let’s take some of the larger club as an example, they have been receiving significant games development funding for over 20 years now. If the principle is to build self-sufficient clubs, then you would hope that those clubs would be in a position to be managed and coached from within.”
