The All-Ireland first round draw has produced a blockbuster rematch of last years final as Donegal face Kerry. Kerry defeated Donegal 1-26 to 0-19 last July to claim the All-Ireland. However, Donegal have beaten the Kingdom in their latest two meetings with a crucial win coming in the Allianz Football league decider.
Fans are disappointed that the biggest first-round matchup might not be on free to air television with RTÉ and GAA+ in an impasse as both broadcasters aim to select the match as their first choice. One supporter on X claimed the dispute was "amateur" and criticised the potential backlash the GAA will receive for putting a fixture of this magnitude behind a paywall.
"Feels like serious amateur hour stuff when the pecking order there isn't contractually obligated &... even more so... that the GAA would be willing to generate the unbelievable backlash they'll get if they try & block that one from FTA. Penny wise, pound foolish comes to mind."
Originally before the change of formatting, GAA+ had the rights to pick the first game but now with the change to an enhanced qualifier system, RTÉ will argue the significance of the game justifies free-to-air television.
Last year RTÉ didn't broadcast any first-round group stage fixtures but after negotiations with the GAA, they have gained the rights to show one first-round fixture free to air.
GAA+, founded in 2014 as part of RTÉ's streaming coverage of football and hurling, has seen an increase in subscribers and revenue since being acquired by the GAA with annual passes charging a competitive price at €120. For the Donegal fans who can't travel they will feel rightfully disappointed if their match is put behind a paywall.
"Especially given the distance from Donegal to Kerry... Grab All Association......" is what one X user said.
