Newcastle fans put rivalry to one side with gesture to Sunderland fan with cancer

Some things are bigger than football.

Newcastle United beat Birmingham City 4-0 today to return to the top of the Championship. But early in the game, football was at the back of everyone's mind as St James' Park came together in a show of solidarity with young Sunderland fan Bradley Lowery. The youngster has been fighting bravely after a cancer diagnosis, and his family was given some bad news this week. https://twitter.com/x_CharlJenkins9/status/806574973812899844 Everton fans had previously joined forces to help fund Bradley's treatment, raising hundreds of thousands of pounds, while he had the privilege of being the mascot when Everton met Sunderland in the Premier League last season. And, while he might be a Sunderland fan, he's first and foremost a football fan.
