Thankfully, he gave a good bit of insight into his current situation, after leaving Everton last season, and when he will make a decision on his next move.

The Irish legend made it very clear that he would have retired fully from football had it not been for a conversation with Ireland boss Heimir Hallgrimsson on staying until Euro 2028.

He said: "I'm keeping fit and training and not stressing too much about what's next.

"I probably was done 100% at the end of the season, until I spoke with the Ireland manager. I'd done quite well in the Ireland games over the last year, we got close to the World Cup...he mentioned about me staying on, to be part of it for the Euros in a couple of years. That's a long way away.

"That kind of planted a seed in my mind - maybe I could carry on and see what it's like."

He also revealed that he was in talks with Championship side Sheffield United, adding: "I spoke to them. I met the manager, I went down there...it just felt a bit soon after Everton. It all happened too soon, I didn't want to keep them hanging on, because I didn't want to mess them around trying to get players in...I decided it just wasn't right."

However, he has not yet confirmed whether he will definitely find a new club and keep going until a potential home Euros, but he was clear that a decision will be made 'soon'.

He continued: "I'm training, I'm ticking over, I'm training myself. It's not the same. I'm trying to stay as fit as I can. But, yeah, now the window closes, things might open up a little bit. I'll be making a decision very, very soon. Again, if it wasn't for the Ireland stuff, my decision would have been made."
