He captained New Zealand's touring side on their first trip to the northern hemisphere in 1905, a team known as the Originals and the first to earn the All Black nickname.
And he came from Donegal.
Dave Gallaher is the subject of a new documentary that airs tomorrow night at 9.30pm on Setanta, and from the looks of the trailer below it will be a very interesting watch.
Gallaher is revered in New Zealand, where there is a statue of him outside Eden Park in Auckland, and judging by the tributes paid by the likes of All Black greats Tana Umaga and Richie McCaw, we in Ireland should probably take this opportunity to learn more about one of our own.
