It turned out that Mayo didn't need any extra help to over the line in Sunday's All-Ireland final, after 75 years of hurt.
However, there has been a claim that Mayo made a last-ditch attempt to convince former player Oisín Mullin to return from Australia, where he has been playing AFL with the Geelong Cats since 2023.
Speaking on the Fox Footy AFL 360 show, Cats coach Chris Scott explained: “Oisín Mullin had taken a phone-call from the Mayo coach just planting a seed about possibly after our game against Melbourne on Friday night that he might be able to pop over to Ireland to play in the final and then come back.
“This is, bearing in mind right in the period where we have three weeks where Oisín is going to play on.
"Then the next week he has (Collingwood) and the next week after that plus an All-Ireland final! We were kind of open to the conversation.”
Just last week Mullin spoke about his desire to return for his club Kilmaine this season if his schedule allows for it.
He said: “I’d be hoping to wear the green and red again this year – the green and red of Kilmaine!
“I’d love to get back and play in the club championship, but the county championship starts early now and by the time we’re finished in Geelong, it’s over for Kilmaine too.
“Hopefully, this year they’re in the running when I’m finished here and I’ll get the chance to get back.
“As regards Mayo, I’m contracted here at the moment and loving it. I’m content and happy at Geelong and I’m not in a rush back just yet, but hopefully some day I’ll be putting the jersey back on.”
