To paraphrase Alan Partridge, Terry Jones has a foot like a traction engine.
Terenure College and Old Wesley contested the final of the Metro League Division 4 yesterday afternoon, and with seven minutes to go there was just the kick of a ball in it, as Terenure narrowly led 8-6.
After winning a penalty a metre inside their own half, they chose not to kick for territory, but rather have a crack at goal, and the chance of extending their lead to five.
Most of the crowd assumed that fullback Jones was killing a minute off the clock, and with very little wind to back him, it looked looked like being a bit of a speculative effort.
Amazingly though, his 51 metre punt had just enough gas in the tank to skim the crossbar and go over. The touchjudges took their sweet time before raising their flags, and the Nure held on in a nervy final few minutes to take the title 11-6.
Were he another two inches further inside his own half, that ball would have fallen short. What a hit!
