The alleged deliberate knock on that cost Australia the game

Jack O'Toole

Ireland won their summer Test series against Australia on Saturday with a 20-16 win in the third and final Test in Sydney.

A second-half try from CJ Stander a 15-point personal haul from Ireland fly-half Johnny Sexton was enough to steer the tourists home but a late push from Australia saw the game remain in the balance until the final play of the match.

After working their way patiently into the Ireland 22 with the clock expiring, the Wallabies attacked wide with the overlap but couldn’t quite execute after their last minute attack crumbled out over the right touchline.

Ireland looked to have sealed the series win but referee Pascal Gaüzère referred to Television Match Official Ben Skeen to see if Ireland winger Jacob Stockdale had deliberately knocked the ball down in an attempt to stifle the Wallabies attack.

After spending a considerable amount of time reviewing the footage, Skeen ruled that a deliberate attempt had not been made and that the play would go back to the ensuing line-out, which, given that time had expired, gave Ireland the victory and a vital series win.
