Now it is Lorcan Dow’s chance to do his parents proud

The Ulster forward has been named at No.8 in the Ireland Under-20 team to face Scotland in the final Six Nations match of the championship. Having impressed thus far in his underage career, Dow is hoping to finish the season on a high. That includes beating the Scots then helping Ireland to Junior World Championship success this season.

The 20-year-old first came into the Irish set-up through the Exiles squad, in England, but secured a move to Ulster last season.

Dow tells us that Ulster have been great in helping him settle in Belfast and teaming him up with a couple of underage teammates in an apartment near the city centre. In striking out on his own, Dow leaves behind proud parents Jonathan Dow and Anna Healy.

‘My parents were both actors,’ he explains. ‘I spent my formative years, about six years, living here before we moved across to London.

‘There was always that connection and I always wanted to come back and play for Ireland.’

Dow adds, ‘My mum would have did a lot of theatre. She was in the Abbey and the Gate Theatre. My dad was a TV actor and was for a number of years. He now does voiceovers. He was in The Bill for about four years.’

Of course, top of SportsJOE’s agenda upon getting back to the office, from our interview with Dow, was to hunt down clips of his acting parents.

Anna Healy is a stage actor with a seriously impressive CV. She also has a number of TV credits that include Cardiac Arrest and the Irish comedy series Fergus’ Wedding.

‘Jo’ Dow was a small-screen heavyweight for about 15 years and is still a jobbing actor. Some of his credits include The Bill, Eastenders, London Burning and Cardiac Arrest. Here he is starring opposite Helen Baxendale [of Cold Feet and Friends fame], as Dr Jim Mortimer in Cardiac Arrest.

He fought like a tiger for the rights of his fellow policeman when he appeared as PC Barry Stringer in The Bill.

1997 saw him star as a hotel manager in the Bill Murray spy caper The Man Who Knew Too Little. We will let the trailer do the talking.
