The South African prop's contract was due to expire this summer, but province have announced that he has extended his deal by a further six months, bringing him up to the end of December of 2015.
It's a similar deal to the one Munster made with the predecessor to Botha's jersey, John Hayes, who delayed his retirement util midway through the 2011/12 season, helping the province out while they were missing their International contingent at the World Cup.
Speaking about the deal, Munster coach Anthony Foey said: "BJ's contract is up at the end of this season but after working closely with the IRFU we have thankfully secured the services of a player of his caliber for a further six months.
"He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the scrum and front row and it is a huge boost to the squad to have him available during the World Cup window when our squad numbers will be reduced."
It's unclear whether the 25-times capped Springbok will seek a new club or retire after his deal expires, but it does open up the possibility of a big front row signing for Munster, Stephen Archer and John Ryan the only remaining members of the squad able to pack down at tight head.
Munster have also announced that development hooker Niall Scannell will move on to a full two year contract at the start of next season, while 23-year-old hooker Kevin O'Byrne has been offered a one year development.
He is one of the province’s best talents. Leinster’s Alan Spicer has appeared in court charged with assaulting a woman at Copper Faced Jacks nightclub in Dublin. The incident is alleged to have occurred on March 1st of this year. The 21-year-old was arrested at 4.05am that day, and is currently on station bail. He […]
