You’d have to appreciate Davy Fitzgerald’s reason for considering leaving Wexford

The bane of all manager's lives

Niall McIntyre

The one word that pops to mind when you consider Wexford’s 2017 season is progress. They’re a young side, they’ve claimed some valuable scalps. They may have went down disappointingly to Waterford, but the best should be yet to come.

The Model County’s early season escapades could be easily forgotten about at this stage, on the back of Sunday’s heartbreak.

But this Wexford team, and Wexford supporters in general, must realise that they have made giant strides this year, and with a youthful squad brimming with potential, this should only be the beginning for them.

It seems so long ago that Wexford defeated Kilkenny in a jam-packed Wexford Park in the Leinster semi-final, and even longer ago that they defeated Limerick, Galway and Kilkenny again in a rip roaring league campaign.

The people of Wexford must have perspective.

Many of them will have the sense to have such perspective, and this would make it all the more disappointing for them if Davy Fitzgerald decided to leave.

Fitzgerald brought the magic back to Wexford, he created this team and his honest and genuine approach, which may be overstated at times, but this emotion endeared them to their faithful following.

The Clare man’s comments after the game are none-too encouraging for those Yellow Bellies, but they’re hard to argue with.

“I’m taking a bit of time to reflect and see what the story is,” he said to the Irish Independent.

“It’s a long drive. I’ll consult my family and see what the story is.

“You’ll appreciate it’s two hours 45 minutes down, you leave at one or two in the day and you’re not home until one or two at night.”

It’s clear for all to see that the famous Davy Fitz’ passion is still burning as brightly as it’s ever been, but when it takes almost twelve hours out of your day, it begs the question, is it really worth it?
