What have the Waterford and Limerick managers said

Earlier this month, Waterford boss Peter Queally, who was a selector for the last two years, spoke about finally landing his dream role last summer.

He said: “It’s no secret that I tried to get this role before, so to be in the role eventually, it’s very satisfying.

“I kind of had drawn a line under it after 2019. I suppose the fact that I’ve been with the group for the last two years, I saw the potential in them. I grew some good relationships with the backroom that was there in the last couple of years, and the players.

“I just said maybe there’s still something in this bunch and I’ll give it one more go and continue that relationship and work that we’ve been doing.”

Limerick boss John Kiely, who has won five All-Irelands with the team, recently spoke about his continuing desire to be at the helm.

He said: “You have your mind made up beforehand, to be honest,” he says. “It’s not that you leave it expire and then visit it.

“I would have had that question in my head for the previous 12 months and one of the main litmus tests for me is, No 1, I enjoy it; the journey, the work and being with the group.

“No 2, and it sits alongside it in terms of importance, do you think that the group are benefiting by being there? Enjoyment and benefit to the group, are the two primary questions.

“I have always really enjoyed being with this group. There’s a fantastic backroom team.

“There have been changes over the years, there has probably been a bit more change this last winter but nonetheless there are great relationships there, great camaraderie there, great purpose there and great enjoyment.”
