Tyrone club’s promotion to senior division in doubt over claims they used an ineligible player

Talk about anti-climatic.

Just a few months ago, a video of Greencastle GAA had gone viral on the Twittersphere, as the footage showed jubilant scenes of the team securing promotion to the Tyrone senior football division.

They had done everything they could, but needed to wait on a different result to secure promotion, and as the team were huddled around the laptop, the clip showed them watching the other game finish in their favour and so, the celebrations commenced.

However, the club are now in serious danger of losing their promotion, and being hit with a two-point deduction following the use of an ineligible player.

In their win over Kildress to clinch the Division Two league title, the St Patrick’s men are alleged to have used an u17 player which is against current rules, which state that u17 players cannot play at senior level.

This means that the Tyrone Competitions Control Committee has decided to deduct the point from Greencastle, and award it instead to Aghyaran, meaning the former will have to compete in Division Two again this season.

However, the club are going to appeal the decision based on the fact that this revelation was made through video evidence.

If a game is going to be recorded, it needs to be approved by the CCC, which wasn’t the case in this situation.

As it stands though, the delirious scenes that went viral just a short while ago, may soon be a memory of what could have been, rather than what is.
