Oisin McConville believes drama after the hooter between Kerry and Donegal has exposed a rule the GAA have failed to enforce.
The fiery rematch of the 2025 All-Ireland final encounter in Killarney descended into violent scenes at half-time due to a flare up between the two sets of players. (You can watch the scenes below).
Kerry's Micheal Burns fell victim to the tense scenes and was sent off after the interval by referee Sean Hurson for his punch on Ryan McHugh.
Speaking on the GAA Social Podcast, Oisin McConville said Hurson's intervention at half-time was correct. However, the former Armagh star said it should never have led to what transpired.
McConville said: "What Sean Hurson did at half-time the other day, that should have been implemented at the start of the game.
"It’s consistently implemented in Division 4. It gets a wee bit more loose in Division 3. It gets a wee bit more loose in Division 3."
Current rules only allow one person, the manager, to stand on the side-line during the game. However, McConville feels these rules are being ignored.
The current Wicklow manager said: "The amount of people that stand on the side-line. So it’s one person on the side-line. So that is the directive for all teams.
"Whenever we line up for a game, Gary Duffy, who’s the assistant manager with me in Wicklow, he’ll stand beside me.
"Next thing, the fourth official will put him back into the dugout.
"I switch on The Sunday Game and I see Division One teams with four and five and sometimes six absolutely loaded on the side-line, and there’s no consistency in that.
It will be soon revealed if there will be further fall-out from the match, but McConville believes new rules aren't needed. Rather current ones need to be enforced.
