Intercounty hurler’s commitment on a big wedding day is pure GAA

That's some mileage

He just couldn’t choose between family and hurling, so why not do both?

The Allianz Hurling League for 2017 commenced at the weekend and it threw up a number of entertaining games.

Clare, who are hoping for improved fortunes this season after suffering much disappointment in the latter years of Davy Fitzgerald’s tenure, opened their league campaign against an in-form Cork side who were coming off the back of their Munster Hurling League triumph.

Donal Moloney and Gerry O’Connor will be disappointed with their first competitive game in charge, as they succumbed to a 0-21 to 1-11 defeat at Pairc Uí Rínn.

There will be a number of worries for Clare based on this performance, they were second-best to Cork for much of the game but whenever they were on the front foot, they failed to capitalise on a number of chances.

Nevertheless, one concern which the new established joint managers may not have is the commitment shown from their players and this couldn’t be better exemplified by Clare goalkeeper, Donal Tuohy.

It’s safe to say that Tuohy had a busy day last Saturday as Clare’s opening league game happened to fall on the same day as his brother’s wedding, according to The Clare Herald.

Tuohy was groomsman for the special day and he had to travel from the wedding in Crusheen, Co.Clare to Cork for the match and then back to Gort, Co. Galway for the reception.

Now that’s commitment.

In a way it wasn’t a bad day on a personal level for Tuohy, besides playing a part in a special occasion for his family, he also kept a clean sheet in the opening league encounter, unfortunately it wasn’t enough for his side as it was points that won it for Cork in the end.
