He did not hold back!
Galway were 1-14 to 1-13 winners over Cork in yesterday’s All-Ireland Senior Camogie final, after going into the showdown at Croke Park as underdogs.
Carrie Dolan was the hero for the Tribeswomen, with her injury-time free deciding the game, giving them their fifth title and their first since 2021.
It also ended the Rebels’ bid for three-in-a-row and was revenge for last year’s final loss.
Despite the win, however, Galway boss Cathal Murray was aggressive in his post-match comments, and slammed what he felt was favouritism from the media towards Cork.
He singled out the Examiner, a Cork publication, who had written an article titled “Cork v Galway: three key players who could decide the All-Ireland camogie final“, with two Cork players selected and one from Galway.
Murray said: “We knew training was on the money for the last eight, nine or ten weeks. We just backed ourselves. We were written off completely.
“The Irish Examiner yesterday, any Galway person or player reading that, our player rating, go back and read and it’s absolutely f***ing insulting. I thought it was the biggest insult ever.
“But that’s coming out for the last week, two weeks. We were given no chance. We knew we were three points off in 2023 and three points off last year. Small percentages.”
On last year’s final loss and staying on as manager, he added: “Maybe unfinished business. When we look back on it, as management, we felt we got an awful lot right.
“The players, they just performed unbelievably and there’s always just that regret that it just wasn’t the right time to walk away. Obviously we’re proved right now.
“But to be honest with you, at times this year, in January, February, I said, “Oh, Jesus, why the f*** did I stay going?” – especially after the league final.
“I mean, management-wise, we were terrible in the league final. We were shocking. And we weren’t much better on the field either.”
