We reported last week on DJ Carey pleading guilty to 10 charges of fraud, relating to his false cancer claim in order to extort money from individuals.
And now further alleged details of the former Hurler of the Year's methods have been revealed.
An exclusive in the Sunday World published quotes from one of the 34 state witnesses who were due to be called to testify.
The person described three email templates he used for different scamming methods.
They said: “The investigating officers told us that, from half five in the morning until two o’clock the next night, he was busy with emails – he had three templates.
“Basically they were letters looking for help. He had one [relating to] Revenue, and he would send them to people in business who had issues with Revenue and they would be sympathetic.
“He had one related to the banks, saying ‘the banks were at him’ and they needed this help, and that was for people who he knew had issues with the banks.
“Then he had the one about cancer and sympathy. He sent that out to people who he knew either had cancer themselves or were bereaved because of cancer. He was sending them out to everybody.”
The ex-partner of the five-time All-Ireland winner also spoke out against him, and claimed that a complaint she made to Gardaí was never followed up by the police.
She said: “That trauma could have been stopped. These victims should not have become his prey if the gardaí had taken proper notice of me when I made formal complaints back in 2012 about DJ’s conduct, lies and deception.
“They [my complaints] went untreated and there has been a black cloud over my judgment and reputation for many years, which I feel has now been lifted.
“I don’t believe I was heard, and therein lies the problem. So I don’t feel any form of satisfaction or elation this weekend. I just feel desperately, desperately sad for the victims of his crimes."
Cork boss not pleased with ‘hypocritical’ ref behaviour from Limerick manager
A bit of needle…. There was a bit of needle between Cork boss Ben O’Connor and Limerick gaffer John Kiely after today’s Munster final at Páirc Uí Chaoimh. O’Connor was clearly not pleased with some of the behaviour from Kiely, and perhaps some decisions from the officials. And the Rebels manager did admit that things […]

Limerick star makes controversial statement of intent after Munster final win
A big statement! Following their Munster SHC final win over Cork, the Limerick players celebrated passionately on the pitch at Páirc Uí Chaoimh. You could tell the win meant more than usual, after losing to the Rebels in last year’s final and in the round-robin stage this season. One Treaty player, however, went above and […]
