Clare receive 14 All-Star hurling nominations with just one player left out

Star man Shane O’Donnell is up for hurler of the year.

Fourteen members of the All-Ireland winning Clare senior hurling team have been shortlisted for an All-Star.

The Banner County beat Cork in the final to lift the Liam McCarthy Cup again for the first time since 2013.

The Clare men make up almost a third of the 45 nominations, with eight counties represented in total.

All-Ireland runners-up Cork received 10 nominations, Limerick have nine, Kilkenny four, with Waterford, Wexford, Dublin and Antrim all having two players nominated.

Shane O’Donnell will battle it out with Darragh Fitzgibbon (Cork) and Kyle Hayes (Limerick) for Hurler of the Year.

Adam Hogan (Clare), Eoin Downey (Cork) and Cathal O’Neill (Limerick) are up for young hurler of the year.

Midfielder Cathal Malone is the only member of Brian Lohan’s title-winning side that didn’t receive an All-Star nomination.

Clare skipper Tony Kelly would become the most decorated Clare player in All-Star history if he wins his fifth All-Star when the ceremony takes place on Friday 1 November.

The Gaelic football All-Star shortlist was revealed yesterday, with one surprise omission from that list.

Galway’s flying wing back Dylan McHugh – the frontrunner for Footballer of the Year going into the All-Ireland final – was left out of the nominations.

McHugh’s evolution in recent years has been admired by many, and some feel a nomination alone would have been a great commendation for all of his hard work and determination.

All-Ireland champions Armagh raked in 11 nominations, while All-Ireland finalists Galway nabbed eight spots and Ulster champions Donegal boast a haul of seven.
