The Mayo men were kept busy.

April was a relatively quiet month in the GAA calendar. Club championship games were ran off in a number of counties but only a few rounds were played.

Throughout the whole month there was always the sense that this was the calm before the championship storm that would erupt in May.

It was far from bored some of the Mayo players were during the fourth month of the year, however with the Yew County’s Breaffy contingent busy giving a helping hand for a club fundraiser.

The footballers, amongst a number of others from the local community, turned actors for the ‘Breaffy GAA Oskars’ which consists of 10 minute condensed versions of a number of classic movies.

Mayo panellists and members of the Breaffy club, Aidan, Conor and Seamus O’Shea as well as Rob Hennelly, Michael Hall and Matthew Ruane all took part in the event, venturing into uncharted territory for the good of their club.

Rehearsals were taking place over the last few months and the films were recorded in April. They will be shown for the first time this Friday night, May 11 at the Breaffy House Events Arena.

The event will see Aidan O’Shea star as Horse in The Full Monty, which will undoubtedly excite legions of female fans. Meanwhile, brother Seamus will star as Lester in The Snapper.

The club issued a press release which reads as follows.

“Six Mayo and Breaffy football stars are among the 70 local actors bidding for Oskars glory in the upcoming Breaffy GAA Oskars.

The three O’Shea brothers – Seamie, Aidan and Conor – together with Rob Hennelly, Michael Hall and Matthew Ruane are all performing in the Oskars.

The films, recorded in recent weeks, will be shown for the first time at the Gala Premiere Oskars night in Breaffy House Events Arena on Friday, May 11.

There is huge demand for tickets for the eagerly awaited event with organisers advising anyone interested in going to contact any Breaffy GAA committee member or any actor to get your hands on a ticket. Tickets are €25 each.”

All Star footballer Aidan O’Shea is one of the cast in the iconic 90s film The Full Monty. Aidan plays the role of Horse.

Seamie O’Shea, part of the Mayo team who have battled with the Dubs for years, will play a Dub himself in The Snapper.”

There are a number of prizes up for grabs on the night as part of the club’s Seven Day Draw, the most eye-catching of which is surely a coaching session with the O’Shea and co. or a chance to be ballboy or ballgirl at this Sunday’s Connacht semi-fianl. Entrances for the draw will conclude at 12.00 on Thursday afternoon, and can be made by following the link below.
