He finally got his chance to do this.
A first-half Brennan Johnson goal gave Tottenham a 1-0 victory over Manchester United and their first trophy in 17 years, in Wednesday night’s Europa League final.
Spurs had a few key men unavailable for the showpiece clash in Bilbao, with the likes of James Maddison injured during the semi-final clash against Bodo/Glimt.
The Tottenham midfielder still managed to make his presence felt off the pitch instead, as he has made headlines during a post-match interview with CBS. The CBS punditry panel included regulars like Jamie Carragher and Micah Richards, but also special guest Roy Keane.
There have been tensions between the Irish legend and Maddison, dating all the way back to February in the week leading up to Spurs’ 1-0 league victory over United.
Keane threw a dig at the Englishman, after Maddison was seen at a darts tournament while injured earlier in the season.
The former United captain questioned when Maddison was going to step up. He also felt his Spurs’ teammates weren’t going to look at him and feel that they’re fine, thanks to his return from injury.
Maddison delivered his first response to Keane’s comments, by celebrating with his trademark darts celebration, followed by a shush after scoring the winning goal in that 1-0 win in February.
The Tottenham number 10 got the chance to respond directly to Keane, in that CBS interview, which he never planned to do initially.
Maddison began by saying: “I wasn’t going to do any interviews.
‘But then I heard it was Roy Keane, so…”
With his Europa League medal on show for the likes of Keane to see, Maddison got another dig in as he granted Richards’ wish to perform his darts celebration.
Maddison replied: “I will, with pleasure Micah.
Roy Keane, that’s for you, son!”
The Irish icon kept a wry smile on his face for both of Maddison’s shots. Keane insisted he always said the Spurs man is a good player, but just needs to be more consistent.
He got in one last dig at Maddison, in response to the English midfielder’s taunts.
Keane joked: “And he played well tonight!”
