Top five knockouts of Katie Taylor’s pro career

Jack O'Toole

Katie Taylor will take on Delfine Persoon this weekend to unify the Lightweight title.

The undefeated Taylor has compiled a 13-0 record with six wins by way of knockout. Only five of her fights have reached the 10th round as the Wicklow woman has often broken down her opponents with her speed and power.

Taylor will face the experienced Persoon who boasts a very impressive record with her last loss coming at the hands of Zelda Tekin in 2010.

Despite her impressive professional career in women’s boxing, Persoon is still the clear underdog in the fight among bookmakers with the bookies installing Taylor as the prohibitive favourite for their bout in New York this weekend.

Ahead of the fight, we look back at some of the most impressive knockouts of Taylor’s career to date.

5. Taylor v Volante,  Liacouras Center, Philadelphia, 15 Mar 2019.

Taylor just brushed by Volante in the 9th round to retain her WBA and IBF female lightweight titles with a nasty cut above her nose putting an end to the fight in the penultimate round.

The honourable mention here is Taylor’s win over Nina Meinke where the referee stopped the fight in the seventh round after excessive swelling began to appear over one of the German’s eyes.

4. Taylor v Clarkson, Barclays Center, New York. 29 Jul 2017 .

Taylor butchered Clarkson in a one-sided mauling in her American debut. The Olympic gold medalist had way too much for the American and her corner had copped it by the end of the third round when they waved the fight off.

3. Taylor v Kopinska, Wembley, London. 26 Nov 2016.

Taylor made light work of the Polish fighter in her debut at the SSE Arena, disposing of Kopinska with a devastating series of punches near the end of the third round.

Kopinska managed to keep her hands up but Taylor started raining down punches and didn’t stop until the referee called it off.

2. Taylor v Gentili, The O2, London. 4 Mar 2017

It’s not necessarily the cleanest combination but Taylor’s tenacity and the intensity of her punches eventually wears down Gentili’s guard, and as soon as her hands drop, Taylor drops her to the mat with a blazing one-two punch combination.

A good rebound for Taylor in her third fight after she defeated Viviane Obenauf by points in her second pro fight.

1. Taylor v Conner, The 02, London. 10 Dec 2016

Taylor simply overwhelmed Conner in her 10th professional bout. Like many of Taylor’s opponents, the gulf in class was too much and in the third round the Bray native starts throwing some bombs, with Conner beginning to stumble from one foot to the other.

The referee soon stepped in and called off the fight but not before Taylor slipped in one more punch to leave her stumbling into the official’s arms.
