There’s just no stopping Irish boxers

It doesn’t matter if they are fighting in dressing gowns or someone else’s gear, Paddy Barnes and Michael Conlon just got on with it tonight in the latest round of the World Series of Boxing in Italy

The Irishmen had to fight in borrowed gear after their luggage, including their boxing kit, failed to arrive in Italy for their clashes tonight. It didn’t matter too much in the end as they helped Italia Thunder to overcome Puerto Rico Hurricanes in Palermo.

Barnes got the better of Anthony Ortiz in the light-fly class to record a 48-47,49-46,49-46 win and Conlan got his fight over with before the distance when facing Garibaldy Gomez with a TKO in the third round after 54 seconds.

Speaking afterwards John Conlon, Michael’s father, said it was a super night for both men,

‘Two great wins for the guys. Paddy lost the first round, but he came back and broke his heart, as Paddy does.Michael gave an exhibition against a guy who won his first WSB on a stoppage. Michael forced him into two standing counts in the second.’

Barnes tweeted afterwards how he got through his fight
