Katie Taylor slams Cindy Serrano’s husband for his verbal abuse

Jack O'Toole

Katie Taylor retained her WBA and IBF female lightweight titles on Saturday with a convincing unanimous decision win over Cindy Serrano.

The victory marked Taylor’s fourth successive title defence and brought her professional record to 11-0 but the win was somewhat soured by verbal abuse aimed at the Wicklow woman from Serrano’s coach and husband Jordan Maldonado.

Taylor said that Maldonado was saying terrible things to her throughout the fight and added that he should have given his wife more encouragement during the bout.

“I heard that and I heard him throughout the whole fight. He was saying terrible things and it was his wife who was in the ring,” she said.

“He was saying ‘you picked the weaker Serrano’. That’s a terrible thing to say. At least give your wife some encouragement. That was ridiculous of him.”

Taylor said that she wants to fight Serrano’s sister Amanda sometime next year with the WBO female super bantamweight champions seemingly eager to make the fight happen.

“I think I’m going to try and fight on December 15 but no I just want to be involved in big fights again. It was great atmosphere tonight, it was great to fight one of the Serrano sisters and the other one I hope is on the way sometime next year as well.

“That fight between myself and Amanda is the fight that everyone wants to see.”

Serrano tweeted after Taylor’s win over her sister: “Congrats to Katie Taylor for her win tonight against my sister Cindy.

“I hope I get my shot. I promise it will be a toe to toe war! I’m not moving nowhere! I think it will be one of the biggest female fights.”
