Katie Taylor offered another history-making fight

This would be incredible!

As a two-weight world champion and the first female fighter to headline Madison Square Gardens, along with her illustrious amateur career, there is little, if anything, left for Katie Taylor to achieve in women’s boxing.

After her trilogy fight with Amanda Serrano, it was hoped that a Croke Park fight could be on the cards, but logistically this looks incredibly unlikely.

A new possibility has now emerged, in the form of US fighter Mikaela Mayer.

The WBO welterweight champion has offered to go down to Taylor’s weight of light-welterweight, but also suggested a fight at 147lb, which, if Taylor was victorious, would make the Bray woman a three-weight world champion.

Mayer said on X: “I’m willing to come down to 140 for @KatieTaylor or she can take her shot at another division and fight me for my 147 lb title. Either way, I always hoped we would cross paths and this may be our last chance if Katie is looking to retire soon. Still think she’s got a lot left tho!”

Last year, Taylor spoke of her desire to headline in Las Vegas, saying: “To headline a huge show in Vegas would be absolutely special. Vegas is nearly like the Mecca of boxing.

“This is where all the big fights happen. I have done Madison Square Garden. I’ve headlined the two shows back in Ireland but to headline somewhere here in Vegas would be very, very special as well.”

So perhaps a fight in Sin City against Mayer could tempt her.
