It was not the Bray boxer's first ever defeat but few were expecting this.
Katie Taylor did not qualify for the Olympics today.
The earth is still on its' axis but the Irish nation is concerned. As a matter of fact, we're worried witless.
Taylor has only ever lost eight of her 173 bouts. The last time she was on the wrong end of a decision was 2011, when Bulgarian Denitsa Eliseeva beat her.
With Zaur Anita in her corner - she is now training without her father, Pete - Taylor lost to Yana Alekseevna of Azerbaijan.
This is not the last chance for Taylor. She must now do well in the World Championships in Astana, next month, if she is to qualify for Rio 2016. However, she can massively help her cause by winning tomorrow's 3rd/4th place bout against Svetlana Staneva.
It took a while for boxing fans to come out from behind the couch, as Alekseevna's hand was raised. When they did, they hit Twitter to lament, complain and seek comfort.
Fellow Olympians were quick to gee Taylor up
