The proposed date for Katie Taylor’s first title defence is a school night

To sleep or not to sleep?

The opponent seems to be locked in and the venue should sell out, but we’re not so sure we agree with the date.

Katie Taylor was only crowned the Women’s WBA lightweight champion, last month, when she immediately set her stall out. Newly-won belt draped over her shoulder, Taylor told Sky Sports:

“This is the start of the takeover for me in the lightweight division, I’d love to unify these belts. Obviously, one step at a time.”

Taylor is hoping to take a few steps and run through her first challenger for that belt, Jessica McCaskill of the United States. If that goes well, title defence number two should take place in Ireland early next year:

The bout was originally slated for Friday, December 15 at York Hall, in England, but there are fears the venue may be too small and that the fight could be in the shadow of the rematch between British heavyweights David Haye and Tony Bellew.

Instead, an alternative date and time have been suggested and it’s on a school night.

Taylor is still set to be the first ever female fighter to headline a fight card broadcast on Sky Sports but it may take place on Wednesday, December 13 in New York.

“We’re going to announce another show for Wednesday, December 13, which is actually part of the Haye-Bellew fight week,” Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn told IFL TV.

“Monday [December] is the Katie Taylor work-out,” he added, “Tuesday the Katie Taylor press conference and Wednesday the fight.”
