Conor McGregor speaks emphatically on Floyd Mayweather history of domestic abuse

Strong, passionate words

Patrick McCarry

We were wondering if this matter would be addressed in the lead-up to the fight.

It has. Conor McGregor has gone there.

On five occasions, from 2002 to 2011, Floyd Mayweather Jr. was charged with five instances of violence in the public domain. Two of the charges related to the domestic abuse of ex-girlfriend Josie Harris and another related to the assault on Melissa Brim, mother to his daughter.

In 2011, Mayweather served 60 days in a correctional facility after he attacked Harris in front of the couple’s children.

Many speculated on whether McGregor would bring up Mayweather’s chequered past when it came to violent instances during July’s promotional world tour for their fight.

Both men flung tonnes of abuse at each other but domestic violence was not mentioned. Until now.

During his open work-out session in Las Vegas, on Friday, McGregor took umbrage with Mayweather Jr and his camp perpetuating the line that the Dubliner had made racist comments during that world tour. It prompted a stinging response from ‘The Notorious’. He told ESPN:

“Mayweather knows there is no racism from me. His father knows. [Leonard] Ellerbe knows. Ask these people.

“[Floyd] said I labelled him a monkey. I never once in my life labelled him or any African-American a monkey and it f***ing annoys me that he’s even bringing this sort of stuff up. Like I said, if I was to label him after any animal, it would be the rat or the weasel. Because that is a rat or weasel move – trying to manipulate someone’s words and trying to create something that is not even there.

“And [racism] is such a sensitive subject. I mean, he’s a man that beats his wife in front of his kid. He is the dirt of the dirt.

“To even bring that [racism] up and even try to engage in that is, you know what, that shows me his true colours.”

Sensational comments and the gloves are most definitely off.
