Carl Frampton completely shuts down sectarian troll

All that over a GAA jersey

Ben Kiely

It’s remarkable that Carl Frampton still has to put up with this type of crap in this day and age.

The former two-weight world champion is one of the best boxers the island of Ireland has ever produced.

Frampton is a protestant who grew up in Tiger’s Bay, a unionist area of Belfast, but that seems insignificant in the context of what he symbolises. Boxing is his main concern, not politics.

In the early stages of his career, he trained in Catholic boxing clubs. His wife, Christine, is Catholic. His manager, Barry McGuigan, is also a Catholic. He simply doesn’t buy into the idea that a person’s religious beliefs defines who they are.

The other day, Frampton was out for lunch with his daughter. He wore an Antrim GAA jersey and didn’t think twice about posing for a photo wearing the shirt.

The post went down a storm. The sight of a star from one discipline donning the apparel of another was generally received well.

He wore a jersey… big whoop!

However, one Twitter user didn’t take too kindly to Frampton’s choice of clothing. They criticised him for representing ‘the other side’ and urged loyalists to stop supporting him on these grounds.

Frampton wasn’t prepared to take this message lying down. He fired back with a response of his own that clocked up way more interactions.

Any more of that craic, and the troll will become very friendly with the custom-made hurl made by ProGaa, a shop on Beechmount Avenue.

End of discussion.
