WATCH: O’Donovan brothers’ unbelievable Olympic feat brings RTÉ pundit to tears

Conan Doherty

This is what it means.

This is what it means to the rowing community, for the people who have given so much, for all the near-misses. This is what it means for Ireland.

Neville Maxwell watched on at Gary and Paul O’Donovan’s amazing Olympic success and he couldn’t control himself. After the Cork brothers came home in a silver medal placing in the men’s lightweight double-sculls final in Rio, RTÉ panned back to the studio and Maxwell was literally on the edge of his seat.

He was out of breath, he was overcome with emotion and he was bloody brilliant to watch.

He summed up just how much the Irish rowing success means to the community and Ireland and, in his own words, we can put fourth place in the f**king bin now.
