WATCH: Embarrassing scenes as USGA president repeatedly gets US Open champion’s name wrong

Ben Kiely

Shame on you Donna Murty Diana Murphy.

Brittany Lang is the U.S. Women’s Open champion after defeating Anna Nordqvist in the play-off on Sunday.

All golfers dream of winning major tournaments and having their name called out at the awards ceremony, but unfortunately for the champion, the latter never happened.

During the awards ceremony USGA president Diana Murphy was left red-faced as she kept referring to Lang as “Bethany” in her speech.

Murphy has since issued a statement apologising to the golfer, before wheeling out the oldest excuse in the book for the error.

“I would like to apologize to the 2016 U.S. Women’s Open champion, Brittany Lang, During the prize presentation, I mistakenly called her by the wrong name repeatedly.”

“I have expressed my regret to Brittany personally and explained that in the heat of the moment, I became nervous and made these mistakes. I appreciate her understanding, and I am sorry that what I said may have taken away from a historic moment for a very deserving champion.”
