It’s an incredible film.

The Iron Claw tells the story of the famed Von Erich wrestling family through the eyes of the second-oldest son, Kevin, as he navigates a career in the sport, a cruel and overbearing father, and multiple tragedies along the way.

The film was released to critical acclaim in Ireland in 2024, becoming beloved among film fans, and soon to be many more now that it is available to stream.

It was written and directed by Sean Durkin (Martha Marcy May Marlene, The Nest), and produced by esteemed indie company A24.

It boasts a stellar cast, with Zac Efron’s turn as Kevin taking most of the plaudits, while Holt McCallany (Mindhunter) is phenomenal as patriarch, Fritz.

Two of Hollywood’s hottest under-35s, Harris Dickinson (Triangle of Sadness, Babygirl) and Jeremy Allen White (The Bear, Shameless), also feature.

Wrestling aficionados will be glad to know that former WWE star, Chavo Guerrero Jr., plays The Sheik, with Bruiser Brody, Michael Hayes, and the legendary Ric Flair all featuring as characters.

On training for the film, Efron said: “I don’t know how these guys do it, man.

“You think you’re getting the hang of it, and you speed up a few times and your confidence gets built up. Then you slam into one of those things just an inch too high and your rib is like gone. You can’t breathe for a couple days.

“It’s shocking that first time you do it. You’re like, this is not as easy as it looks on TV.”

Jeremh Allen White added: “They reached this level of rock stars or superheroes, and really for not a very long period of time.

“That was interesting to explore, the relationships (between) those brothers and the amount of competition and rivalry inherent in that sport.”
