Win 1,002 for the Swiss

Roger Federer is into the third round of the Australian Open but it wasn’t without difficulty for the former world No 1 who had to battle back from a set down against Italy’s Simone Bolelli.

The second seed was struggling in the early stages and got some treatment from his trainer for what appeared to be a bee sting or a blister on his small finger at the end of the opening set. One cameraman got a bit too close however, with Federer barking ‘Do you need to be so close? to the poor man who scurried back into the shade at the Rod Laver Arena.

The treatment clearly worked as he bounced back to win 3-6,6-3, 6-2, 6-2, with this incredible drop-shot the highlight of the match:

Elsewhere Andy Murray eased past local hopeful Marinko Matosevic in just over an hour and half by 6-1,6-3,6-2 in temperatures of up to 30C.

Maria Sharapova is also through to the next round but only just as she had to edge her way past Alexandra Panova, saving two match points along the way.

The world No 150 was hoping for a first ever win at a Grand Slam event and led 5-1 in the final set but was eventually beaten 6-1, 4-6, 7-5.
