Report: Ireland cricket coach Phil Simmons lined up to take over West Indies

Trinidadianian in charge of Ireland since 2007

This is seriously disappointing

If Irish cricket fans weren’t already on a downer after exiting the Cricket World Cup last weekend, it now seems that we’re going to be looking for a new head coach too. According to reports this morning it seems the West Indies are lining Phil Simmons to take charge and rather quickly too.

The 51 year old has been in charge of Ireland since 2007 and led us through two World cups, the most recent ending in a disappointing exit to Pakistan on Saturday afternoon. His contract is not due to expire until the end of the year, but it’s almost certain that Cricket Ireland will not stand in his way of managing a side he represented  in 26 Tests and 143 one-day internationals

The Windies are still involved in the World Cup and face New Zealand on Sunday in the fourth q-final of the weekend. It’s believed they are looking for Simmons to take over in time for their three-test series against England in the middle of next month.
