What a performance!
Kate O’Connor has given Ireland one of their great sporting moments, winning a silver medal in the heptathlon at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
She came into the final event, the 800m, in second place and solidified it with an astonishing fifth personal best out of seven events.
The Dundalk woman came home in seventh, with a time of two minutes and 9.56 seconds, ahead of her main rival Taliyah Brooks.
The US’ Anna Hall won the race and the gold medal.
It is Ireland’s first medal at the World Championships since Rob Heffernan’s gold in the 50km walk in 2013, and their sixth overall.
Following the 800m, she gave a hugely emotional interview with David Gillick, where the pride of representing Ireland shone through.
She said: “I’m just so happy that I was able to represent Ireland so well and be the first person in a long time to win a world medal outdoors, for our country, it’s insane.
“I think the work that’s gone on behind the scenes, I suppose it’s lovely that’s it kind of coming out now at the world stage.”
“I feel ecstatic, I feel proud, I feel really proud to be Irish.”
