Dolan misses chance to record best ever World Championship result

Fermanagh’s Brendan ‘The History Maker’ Dolan had Michael Smith right where he (thought he) wanted him but check outs and big scores diminished and his world championship dreams have ended.

The 41-year-old from Belcoo was 2-0 up against Smith in a first to four sets clash at the Alexandra Palace but Smith bounced back to win the next four sets and march on. A 10-dart leg and four 180s were the crowd erupting moments of an impressive comeback from the Englishman.

The highlight of a boisterous affair, for Dolan, was clinching the second set with a successful check-out from 120. His defeat ends hopes of reaching the last 16 for the first time.

Smith will now face the winner of Stephen Bunting or James Wade’s last 32 clash, on Tuesday, for a spot in the quarter final.
